Sadly, some people feel the need to criticize or disallow our choices. Just because one person has a deaf/Deaf child, does not mean that s/he is the ultimate expert about hearing loss. Just because someone is a doctor who works with children who have hearing loss or is a speech/pathologist dos not mean s/he is the expert. Each child with hearing loss presents so differently-even if two children have the same exact hearing loss on an audiogram. One child may be very visual and not rely on his hearing (auditory)skills at all, while the other child may be fully auditory and not use her visual cues at all. Parents may be hearing or deaf, use sign or speak, etc. All of these things come into play when choosing which is the best method of communication for a child with hearing loss. As a child grows and develops, it might be clear to parents/caregiver/child that the current mode is not the best and he might want to switch to another mode. Some people use hearing aids or cochlear implants, some use no amplification, etc..
Point is-theser are all our FREE choices. Who makes YOU the person who can make that ultimate decision for the child? Our role in the journey of hearing loss is to be resources, confidents, friends, and helpers-NEVER judgement makers.
