Imagine being deaf... you would not hear the bombs or hear the screams. You would see the lights, feel the ground and see the smoke. You could not ask anyone what was going on. You would feel all alone. During 9/11, those with hearing loss were at a huge disadvantage, because they had no way to connect with the outside world. Those with texting phones could try to connect with others. Since then, however, Video Phones, Facebook, Face Time , Skype and Twitter have increased the ability for people with hearing loss to communicate with each other.
After the explosions, people with hearing loss could use all of the above mentioned technology to connect. They were more aware of the signals and sensations because of all the things they saw during 9/11.
Imagine being deaf in a tragedy-or if you are deaf, what would you do to get help, to get information, to find safety?Do you think it is harder in 2013 for a person with hearing loss than a person with normal hearing?
