I feel that people need to be more open to learn new languages. My question to you is how many languages do you know and what are they? Have you ever tried to experience a language outside of your own? If yes, what drove you to learn a new language? For me, personally English is my first language and American Sign Language is my second. I was lucky to start learning ASL at a very young age. I try not to limit myself to just those languages. I do know a little bit of Spanish and Japanese as well but I would definitely not consider myself fluent in those two languages by any means. I personally believe that learning a language outside of your own really adds depth to a person. With American Sign Language, it has opened up my life to people I would have otherwise never associated with. It opened up my eyes to not only the language but the community and culture of the Deaf. I am sure when people think about culture and languages rarely do they think of the Deaf culture.
I’m curious if any of you at some point in your life were surprised to hear that the Deaf had a culture of their own? They indeed have a culture and I believe it is a great culture. The Deaf culture, community, and American Sign Language have opened up my mind to not only how things are different in the deaf community, but how much things differ between cultures all over the world. It is important for us all to be open to learning new things because it could open up a door that we never knew we wanted opened. What has learning a new language done for you as a person? Do you use it in your everyday life? Share your story below with me and our other viewers.
